Sixteen countries without an army
It is possible: a country without an army. Although it is fair to say that these are usually small isolated islands that, in times of war, can also count on the support of countries such as Australia and the US.
- Costa Rica
The constitution in this peace-loving country has prohibited an active army since 1949. Now there is the University of Peace founded by the United Nations. - Liechtenstein
To save money, Liechtenstein stopped the army in 1868. If war breaks out, an army is allowed, but that has never happened so far. - Samoa
An army has simply never been established on this small island. New Zealand has promised to defend the country if necessary. - Andorra
This mini-state also has no army, but it does have protection treaties with Spain and France. - Dominica
The island nation in the Caribbean Sea south of Guadeloupe has not had an army since 1981. - Tuvalu
This member of the British Commonwealth has never had an army. - Vatican City
The Vatican does have the Swiss Guard, but it formally belongs to the Holy Seat and not to Vatican City. - Grenada
The island in the Eastern Carribean has had no soldiers since the American invasion in 1983. - Kiribati
Another island in the Pacific Ocean where there are no soldiers to be found. Kiribati is counting on the support of Australia and New Zealand. - Nauru
Australia is responsible for the security of Nauru. The country does have an armed police force. - Santa Lucia
This popular holiday destination has two small paramilitary organizations, but no real army. It is protected by a partnership of several Caribbean islands in the region. - Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
This Caribbean island north of Grenada is part of the British Commonwealth and is protected by the same partnership as Santa Lucia. - Solomon Islands
In 2006, after unrest, there was an intervention by Australia and New Zealand, but it does not have its own army. (The country does have one of the most beautiful coral reefs in the world). - Marshall Islands
The United States is responsible for this group of islands in the Pacific Ocean. - Micronesia
The same goes for Micronesia. - Palau
This small state that is part of Oceania can also count on America in times of war.
