While children are expected to acquire all kinds of knowledge about wars, they learn little or nothing about dealing with conflicts or peace building. In the Netherlands there is a ‘peaceful schools’ initiative to which a few thousand schools are affiliated. But not only what children learn, but also how they learn is an important element of efforts to make the world more violence-free. Most children do not yet have a choice in what they learn. Would it help children in your area to have more choice in what they learn? Would they be interested in learning more about peace? What could you do to change this? What alternative forms of education are there in your area, such as Montessori and democratic schools?
