Peace Please
Peace Please aims to translate a Culture of Peace, a ‘big’ and somewhat abstract political concept, into the context of organizations, so that they can build a Culture of Peace in their working environment.
A Culture of Peace is ‘a set of values, attitudes, traditions and behaviors and ways of life that reject violence and prevent conflict by addressing its causes, through dialogue and negotiations between individuals, groups and countries.’
A cultural change towards a Culture of Peace is desperately needed to sustainably address issues we face worldwide, such as the environmental crisis, famine, war and the pandemic, all of which require greater global cooperation. The Peace Please game is aimed at cooperation within organizations, so that they can work on a small scale towards a Culture of Peace.
The game consists of cards with challenges in the eight areas of a Culture of Peace and actions. Players choose together which actions are appropriate to overcome the challenges. In this way they become acquainted with different types of actions that contribute to a greater or lesser extent
to a Culture of Peace. It is therefore a cooperative game, in which players engage in a collective decision-making process.
Here you see two examples of the cards.
The challenges, 16 in total, of the Peace Please game correspond to the eight areas of a culture of peace. These areas have been adapted to the context of organizations:
- Core values and concepts (original: peace education);
- Teamwork and cooperation (original: understanding, tolerance and solidarity);
- Decision making (original: Democratic participation);
- Communication & information sharing (original: Free flow of information);
- Conflict Navigation (Original: Security and Disarmament);
- Respect for Human Rights;
- Impact & connection (original: sustainable economic and social
- development);
- Equality and representation (original: equality of women and men).
You can experience the game once in a workshop. For lasting change, play it several times and reflect and evaluate which actions are useful and which are not. Use the accompanying Guide to assess your progress towards a culture of peace. This is how you become a pioneer in creating a Culture of Peace in your organization.
