A new generation of nomadic shepherds tends to their herd in the conflict ridden Kashmir valley. The tribal Gujjars of Kashmir are among the poorest, facing uncertainty in a modern world where nomadic culture is side-lined and considered backward. They face violence from the military and insurgents, who have displaced them, grabbed food and animals, subjected them to forced labour or sexual violence.
The inability to move around is threatening the traditional way of life. Will young Gujjars be able to have pride and dignity in their culture and work? Including the voices and aspirations of young Gujjars in Kashmir’s policies remains crucial to their existence and peace-building in Kashmir.
